For Researchers

Research Access

We provide ethical access pathways for researchers who want to work with our archive respectfully and responsibly.

Why This Archive Exists

AAPI Voice Archive is community-led and ethically governed. Research is a secondary — but important — purpose of our work.

We believe that Asian American experiences deserve to be studied and understood, but only when that research serves communities rather than extracts from them.

Our archive is designed to support research that advances understanding, informs policy, and gives back to the communities whose stories we preserve.

Ethical Governance

Our technical and policy infrastructure is designed to protect contributors while enabling meaningful research:

Record-Level Consent

Each contributor decides which stories can be accessed for research and under what conditions.

Segment-Level Permissions

Even within a story, contributors can restrict access to sensitive portions while sharing other parts.

PII Protection

Personal identifying information is stored separately and never exposed to researchers without explicit consent.

Audit Logging

All research access is logged and auditable, ensuring accountability and transparency.

Requesting Access

Research access is granted by request. We review each application to ensure alignment with our ethical guidelines and community benefit.

What we look for:

  • Clear research purpose and methodology
  • Institutional affiliation and oversight (IRB where applicable)
  • Commitment to ethical use and community benefit
  • Willingness to share findings with contributors

Methodology & Resources

We've developed interview frameworks and ethical guidelines that balance research rigor with community values.

Framework Documents

Our methodology documents and interview kits are available to approved researchers and community partners. These are living documents, designed for community use.
